Eye Candy

Have you ever had one of those jobs everyone considered so cool?

When I reported, I heard it all the time. Truth is, reporting is fun. And doing it right, plus shooting photos and editing video, is a lot of work. That’s why it’s called a job!

I suspect Chef Taylor knows what I mean.

Nearing the fourth and final year of a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts, Taylor took on food styling last quarter.

If I had my druthers, I’d ask T to snap all our photos for Kitchen and Dumplings. But food styling requires time, perfect lighting, props and a ton of patience. In other words: lots of work.

I’m so proud of my oldest stepdaughter, and I wanted to show off her work. (Check our Facebook page for more food art!)

I remember a curious, sweet little girl with freckles asking questions about cooking. Nothing too complicated, but she might want to know how I was able to get the fries so crispy, what steak seasoning I had used or why I folded refried beans into the taco meat (answer: Because my momma did!).

There’s really no learning activity related to this post, but if I could dispense advice, I would simply say, cook with your kids. Especially to those of you who have limited time with your kiddos: Take advantage of it.

You’re not just making food. You’re making memories. I know it sounds trite, but it’s true!

Thank you, Chef Taylor, for the memories.

Until next time,

Tricia
