I Give Up!

That phrase doesn't creep into my mind often, but when it does, I blame exhaustion.

The bunnies won't leave our garden alone. Imagine that!

Kid Chef and I have filled at least eight holes in our small raised bed. Each time it happens, at least one plant dies and the delicate roots of its neighbors sit exposed.

These rabbits burrow down six inches or more when they build a nest. They run back and forth, dodging dogs, noisy kids and lawnmowers, with mouthfuls of grass clippings for their homes. The process amazes me and annoys me at the same time.

At first, I thought the rabbits were using the corners of the raised bed to give them boosts over the fence. Nope. The morning I saw a bunny take a sprinting jump from three feet out, I knew our herbs were in trouble.

So I broke the news to Kid Chef: The bunnies had won this battle.

We transplanted one cilantro and one basil plant and gave the rest of our bounty away. Our herbs now rest safely in a box on top of our patio table; however, the job of keeping them adequately hydrated has become more challenging. We can always plant more starts.

Meanwhile, our cucumbers have blooms, and one of our Juliet grapes shows signs of ripening.

Gardening provides many opportunities to teach. And sometimes, kids, nature simply wins out.

Until next time,
Tricia
