A preschool teacher who cooks with her students gave a presentation to our moms' group this week. While talking with some of the other moms, I was reminded not all families invite their children into the kitchen. In fact, some parents put up gates and locks to keep their kids out.
Our youngest helped unload the dishwasher at 12 months. We cleared the dishwasher of sharp objects, and he removed cups, plates and utensils and handed them to us. At 2, he was using butter knives. While some might judge, we saw he was ready and willing to take on these tasks.
It all started with his own drawer. At the very bottom of our kitchen cabinets, Kid Chef's supplies have their own storage spot.
If you're looking for ideas on what to place in your kid chef's drawer, here are some gadgets to get you started. A trip to the dollar store is a must!
- Recipe cards
- Kids cookbook
- Wooden spoons
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Plastic spatulas, spoons
- Whisk

Grandparents, if your grandchildren aren't playing in the kitchen at home, make a drawer for them at your house and let them explore.
Until next time,
Tricia
