Adding to your family? Need a baby shower gift? How about a conversation starter for a little one who will soon become an older brother or sister?
Written and illustrated by illustrator Selina Alko, I'm Your Peanut Butter Big Brother is the answer.
While Alko was pregnant with her second child, she created this story of wonder. The book centers around a young biracial boy's imaginings about what his soon-to-be-born brother or sister will look like and what kind of personality traits he or she will develop.
Using the common element of food, Big Brother blends colors and tastes while he points out the differences and similarities among those he loves. He asks, "When we play, will you, like Lola, leap, cappuccino-frosted 'fro bouncing along?" And also, "Baby, what shade will you be? Pure coal black or coffee with lots and lots of cream? Ginger cookie brown or midnight licorice purple?"
Vibrant colors and playful images jump off the pages of this book. Filled with gouache paintings and collages, the book had a familiar feel to it on first read. No wonder; the acknowledgements give thanks to Monica Wellington, author and illustrator of Pizza at Sally's, another artist we admire.
This book is one of our family's favorites. Catchy, rhythmic text. Gorgeous scenes filled with imagination and love for family. Candy and snack food! OK, there are a few fruits and vegetables mixed in.
Growing families with preschoolers also will adore this book, especially those with a variety of shades. Visit the author's website for a gander at some of the book's amazing pages, and read more about our Black History month feature.
Until next time,
Tricia
