Kitchen by Pinterest

I'm one of those women who looks at my friends in wonder and awe of their talents.

My friend Grace is a lady of many. And now that she's tooling around the latest online social media craze Pinterest? Who knows what's next.

Here's the wooden-desk-turned-kitchen she surprised her 3 1/2-year-old daughter with at Christmas.
Wowzers. I am so impressed. Look at that shiny sink!

I asked her to give us the details on her preschooler's new "desk kitchen." Here's what she shared:

Mia loves kitchens, but nice, sturdy, wood kitchens are ridiculously expensive. Solution ... make my own!
  • Found an old desk on Craigslist - $35.
  • Removed the fronts of drawers for the microwave, fridge and oven. Kept the front on for the freezer drawer.
  • Removed all handles. Spray painted desk silver.
  • Filled in the holes where handles had been.
  • Painted desk with leftover paint we had around the house.
  • With help from my husband, hinged the front of the drawers on to make the doors.
  • Reattached the handles in new locations.
  • Cut out a large hole in the top of the desk for the sink.
  • Spray painted a plastic bowl silver because we couldn't find a cheap enough stainless steel bowl - $5 for bowl and paint.
  • Placed sink in the hole and secured with glue.
  • My friend has a vinyl cutting machine, so we had the oven, microwave and stove-top pieces cut for $5. (Or painting these shapes on would have worked too.)
  • PVC pipe spray painted silver for the faucet - $3.
  • Old wooden knobs painted silver for faucet handles.
  • Oven knobs purchased at a local re-store - $3.
Final cost: Just a little more than $50 for a solid wood, unique, real-life quality kitchen set that my daughter LOVES.

It does take a lot of time ... and yes, my idea turned into a hubby project. I just can't work all the tools myself, so he had to help with the big stuff. Our daughter's face was priceless on Christmas morning!

Thanks, Grace, for sharing with us! And, readers, please send your kitchen creations photos and stories our way too.

Until next time,
Tricia
